Karen-Lynette Bauer is licensed to practice acupuncture in the State of New York, and is a Diplomate of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (which means she passed the national board exams).
She received her Bachelor and then Master of Science degrees in Daoist Acupuncture at The Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York City, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, a world-renowned Daoist master who was trained in two ancient medical lineages, one in acupuncture, the other in herbal medicine. Karen continues to study and earn certifications in post-graduate specialty courses with Dr. Yuen.
In addition to her Master of Science degree in Acupuncture, she received an Honors in Humanities undergraduate degree from Stanford University, and won both a scholarship and a teaching assistantship as a graduate student in Theatre & Drama at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Karen was introduced to Eastern philosophy while at Stanford. Then in the last 10 years has become an avid student of Qi Gong, a form of movement and meditation that develops the ability to feel the subtle energy that is Qi, and how to allow it to flow freely throughout the body.
Karen has also been certified in the treatment of Gu Syndrome with classical Chinese herbal medicine, a highly developed specialty within Chinese internal medicine, as taught by Heiner Fruehauf, Ph.D., L.Ac. Dr. Fruehauf is a distinguished Sinologist from the University of Chicago who has published extensively on Gu Syndrome. This unique and complex area of Chinese herbal medicine that uses herb formulas and treatments to treat low-grade, chronic infections like Lyme's, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, malaria, and many other difficult-to-eradicate diseases caused by Gu, that is, microbes.
Another of Karen's specialties is sports medicine (acute injuries). Karen is returning to graduate school to complete a doctorate in the clinical practice of classical Chinese medicine, with an emphasis on research studies.
Karen was an opera singer for more than 20 years before retiring and discovering Classical Chinese Medicine. She suffered from fibromyalgia for 18 years, which effectively ended her opera career and motivated her to find a natural way to heal her severe illness.
Her father was the anesthesiologist present at the first brain and the first open-heart surgeries performed in the United States with only acupuncture for the anesthesia (amazing right?), so she has been familiar with acupuncture for decades. However, it wasn't until she attended a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen at The Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in NYC that she discovered just how deep and astonishing acupuncture could be.
As an opera singer for more than 20 years, and an actress for 10 years before that, I am intimately familiar with the challenges that face those who must perform live. I would be more than happy to help any musicians, actors, dancers and athletes with their urgent healthcare or emotional balance needs. The show must go on! Drugs often get in the way of a good performance. Acupuncture can help!
